I, for one, didn't expect to fall in love with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. But what can I say? Those damn catchy musical numbers and intriguing plot lines have captured my heart. And now one of the greatest shows of all time is finally coming back for more: season 2 premieres on Friday, October 21, on The CW.
It may have been awhile since you last caught up with Rebecca, Josh, Valencia and the gang. So before the premiere, here's everything you need to catch up with from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend season 1!
If you're totally new here, let me give you a quick overview: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is the story of Rebecca Bunch, a high-level New York attorney who is unhappy at work, suffers from anxiety and depression, and has a tendency to make rash decisions. After randomly running into her ex-boyfriend from summer camp, Josh, on the street, Rebecca decides on a whim to move to his hometown of West Covina, California and start a new life there. But she's totally not moving there just because that's where Josh lives. (Yes, she is.)
Upon arriving in West Covina, Rebecca discovers that Josh has a long-term girlfriend named Valencia. (PLOT TWIST.) Rebecca gets a job at a local law firm, where she meets her new BFF Paula and boss Darryl. The first season is centered around Rebecca and Paula's countless schemes to get Josh to forget about Valencia and fall madly in love with Rebecca. Another major player in all of this is Greg, Josh's childhood friend, who Rebecca is having a fling with at the time of the season finale. Got all that?
Good. Phew. Okay, so here's where we left off in the last episode:
After spending a weekend cooped up in her house having insane amounts of sex with Greg, Rebecca finds herself admitted to the hospital with a UTI. When Paula comes to visit her, she finds out that Rebecca has been sleeping with Greg and promptly freaks out. (Because she's spent all this time intricately planning to get Rebecca and Josh back together. We're talking very intricate planning.) She performs a dramatic musical number about betrayal and storms out.
Greg, having just bumped into Josh bringing Rebecca flowers, begins to wonder if Rebecca is really over Josh. He concludes that his best bet is to assume a "super chill bad boy who will never openly admit that he likes you" identity to protect himself. Because that always works out great.
Rebecca, on the other hand, has come to terms with the fact that her feelings for Greg go beyond just physical attraction and plans to tell him how she really feels. Her first attempt while they're hanging out at her house doesn't go so well, but she's convinced they'll have their moment at Josh's sister's wedding.
Meanwhile, Josh has decided to finally pull the trigger and propose to Valencia. He asks her to let him do it in his own time, and she agrees.
At the wedding, Josh is blown away when he sees Rebecca looking like a straight-up princess. He goes over to her and starts telling her that Greg is complicated and that he'll disappoint her. Greg sees the two of them talking from across the room and decides that he must have been right about Rebecca still liking Josh, and gets fantastically drunk to help hide his true feelings for her. Rebecca attempts multiple times to tell Greg she cares about him, but he's too drunk to realize it and ultimately tells her, "I think you're cool," before passing out.
At the request of Darryl, who is also at the wedding with his new boyfriend White Josh, Paula comes back to comfort the sad Rebecca and they make up.
Later, Josh's aunt gives him a ring for his proposal to Valencia. Sounds great, right? Wrong. Josh finds out Valencia and Aunt Myrna have planned this little scheme and he is super pissed. ANOTHER PLOT TWIST! It's Valencia who ends up dumping Josh when she realizes that after 15 years of dating he may never ask her to marry him.
Josh catches Rebecca's eye from across the room and asks her to meet him outside. He brings her to his sister's "Just Married" car, tells her that he and Valencia are over, and shows her the letter she wrote him when they were at summer camp, which he apparently keeps on him.
SO, as you might guess, Josh and Rebecca hook up on the hood of that super cool red convertible. (Greg, meanwhile is drunkenly puking into a trash can and finally admits to his empty room that he's in love with Rebecca.) After she and Josh have sex, Rebecca blurts out that she did indeed move to West Covina for him. This is brand new information for Josh, and he looks understandably freaked out. Oblivious to his horror, she calls out, "This is our moment, Josh Chan! I’m just so excited our love story can finally begin!” And then the episode ends.
So that's where we're at and ready for Season 2! It's going to be so good, you guys.
