On Sunday afternoon, Donald Trump sat down for a relaxing viewing of Ellen DeGeneres' Finding Doryfor his first official White House movie screening. A soundproof theater presumably drowned out the raging protesters in his backyard (and around the country), furious over his immigration ban from just two days earlier.
The irony of Trump watching Finding Dory in the wake of his executive order was not lost on some of the most astute writers on the internet, but the movie's star wasn't going to let it go either.
Even though Ellen DeGeneres, who plays the titular Dory, says she doesn't "get political," she took to her show on Tuesday and got unquestionably political.
"If you haven't heard, this is what happened," began DeGeneres. "Over the weekend, on Friday, the president gave an order banning people from seven countries from entering the United States, including people with green cards."
The order banned Syrian refugees indefinitely and prevented those with valid visas from visiting their families.
"And then on Saturday, the president screened Finding Dory at the White House. I don't get political but I will say I am against one of those two things." After assuring her audience a few more times that she doesn't "get political," DeGeneres proceeded to get political.
Now, of course, Finding Dory is about a fish named Dory. And Dory lives in Australia and these are her parents. And they live in America. And I don't know what religion they are but her dad sounds a little Jewish, doesn't matter.
Dory arrives in America with her friends Marlin and Nemo and she ends up at the marine life institute behind a large wall. And they all have to get over the wall. and you wont believe it, but that wall has almost no effect on keeping them out.
At this point, the crowd erupted in cheers. Having covered #NoWall, Degeneres moved on to #NoBan.
Even though Dory gets into America, she ends up separated from her family. But the other animals help Dory. Animals that don't even need her. Animals that don't even have anything in common with her. They help her even though they're completely different colors, because that's what you do when you see someone in need, you help them.
At this point, the crowd erupted in applause. DeGeneres concluded with a message for anyone who watches Finding Dory. Which, as we know, now includes the president.
"So that's what I hope everyone who's watching Finding Dory has learned. Tune in next week when I explain women's rights using the movie Mr. Wrong."
