A news anchor tried to go viral with an "artsy" photo about Paris. It backfired.

The horrific Friday attacks on Paris have inspired mourning and moving tributes around the world, but until now there has been little to laugh at in this story. Fortunately, as inevitably happens every time, a member of the media eventually tweeted something dumb, and now everyone can razz them about it. Let's not be too harsh, though — Kay Burley of Britain's Sky News certainly meant well with her photo of this "sad" old Golden Retriever. But at the same time, the Internet is desperate to take whatever chuckles are available right now.

Yeah, that's just a dog, perhaps a tired one.

Obama & Putin meet face-to-face, but the star is an awkward aide trying to block the camera.

Today, a very serious meeting occurred between very serious people, namely U.S. President Barack Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and U.S. National Security Advisor Susan Rice:

https://twitter.com/LanaLukash/status/665896004353400832

It just so happens that something hilarious also happened when this aide—who looks and acts so much like Veep's nervous presidential bagman Gary Walsh that it could be a viral marketing campaign—tried valiantly and idiotically to prevent cameras from witnessing this sidelines meeting at the G20 conference happening now in Turkey. The video should be queued up, but the awkwardness starts at 56 seconds in.

https://youtu.be/a3oZXo7cdEA?t=56s

Here's a gfycat version, in case you have trouble with video:

Back in the real world, it's fair to say that this meeting is a welcome sign of increased communication between the two great powers in the wake of the Paris attacks. Both Russia and America have been engaged in action against ISIS, but with largely separate agendas. So far, Russia has backed Syria's strongman president Bashar Al-Assad, while the US has supported non-ISIS rebels. Some sources, such as ABC News, are claiming this meeting comes amidst a decline in Russian support for Assad, which would be good news for US-Russian cooperation.

Here, apparently, are all the states ranked from smartest to dumbest.

The United States have been ranked by what they're #1 in and by who's the fattest, but they've now been ranked by intelligence. Specifically, by their IQ, SAT and ACT scores, and percentage of college graduates. Why? Most people would not presume to rank the American states in such a blunt and perhaps crass manner, but after Donald Trump wondered aloud "How stupid are the people of Iowa?" for supporting Dr. Ben Carson over himself, the Washington Posttook it upon themselves to avenge Iowa and rank the rest of the Union in the process.

The darker red states are "smarter," and the paler beige states are "dumber." As the Post points out, those insulted Iowans actually fare very well. It should be noted here again that the scores are a composite. According to the Post, the rankings were compiled by:

  1. IQ, as estimated by Virginia Commonwealth's Michael McDaniel in 2006
  2. 2015 SAT scores, compiled by The Post
  3. 2015 ACT scores, via the company that administers the tests
  4. The percentage of college graduates in the state, compiled by the Census Bureau

By total score, Hawaii comes out as the "dumbest" state, and Massachusetts is the "smartest." You can rank the states by the individual categories, however; by IQ, Mississippi ends up at the bottom, although Massachusetts again comes out on top—perhaps due to the large number of world-class research institutions there resulting in a bunch of eggheads crammed into the area around Boston. That said, the total spread was a mere 9.8 points. But let's cut to the chase. Here are the 10 "Smartest" and 10 "Dumbest" states:

The Smartest

The Dumbest

Don't see your state here? Head over to the Washington Post to see where your home ranks in the great middling 30 states not listed here, and find out more about what the research reveals.

It's a universal human experience. You're talking normally at a party and for some reason everyone's conversation dips at once, making you sound like an uncouth ogre yelling your opinion on the new Star Wars trailer—or worse, you're singing along with a whole audience, and they all know when to stop and you don't. That's what happened to one fan at this concert by British singer Joe McElderry, who was covering Queen's iconic ballad "Somebody To Love":

https://twitter.com/joemcelderry91/status/665512571873722368

Fortunately, McElderry was a gentlemen about the goof, politely saying "not yet" and belting out his rather more on-tune version.

John Oliver throws down a message to the Paris attackers with 'premium-cable profanity.'

John Oliver's Last Week Tonight is unlike any other late night show, using its home on HBO to do longform pieces with no commercial breaks. The ability to swear on HBO is also vital when "fuck you" just needs to be said.

Oliver opened a show with a message for the Paris attackers: "fuck you." While it hadn't even been 48 hours from the time of the attack to the time of the show's taping, Oliver articulated the one thing we know for sure: "This attack was carried out by gigantic fucking arseholes, unconscionable flaming arseholes; possibly working with other fucking arseholes, definitely working in service of an ideology of pure arseholery." It's fucking cathartic to watch:

Husband's touching Facebook tribute to his 'hero' nurse wife goes viral.

Bobby Wesson of Gardendale, Alabama wrote a beautiful post when he caught his bae sleepin'. Bobby's wife Rayena Wesson is a nurse at a hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. Bobby's moving and heartfelt Facebook post celebrating all the hard work she does as both a nurse and a mom has gone viral, with more than 632,000 likes and 149,000 shares.

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=533702656795676&set=a.110313722467907.21407.100004678384282

Bobby writes:

This is my wife taking a nap. In an hour she will wake up, put on her scrubs and get ready for work.

The tools and items she needs to perform her job will be gathered and checked meticulously - her hair and makeup will be done quickly. She will complain that she looks awful. I will disagree, emphatically, and get her a cup of coffee.

She will sit on the couch with her legs crossed under her and try to drink it while happily playing with the toddler that's crawling all over her.

She will occasionally stare off blankly as we talk; silently steeling herself for the coming shift. She thinks I don't notice.

She will kiss the baby, she will kiss me and she will leave to go take care of people that are having the worst day of their entire lives. Car wrecks, gunshot wounds, explosions, burns and breaks - professionals, poor, pastors, addicts and prostitutes - mothers, fathers, sons, daughters and families - it doesn't matter who you are or what happened to you.

She will take care of you.

She will come home 14 hours later and remove shoes that have walked through blood, bile, tears and fire from aching feet and leave them outside.

Sometimes she will not want to talk about it. Sometimes she can't wait to talk about it.
Sometimes she will laugh until she cries and sometimes she will just cry - but regardless of those sometimes she will be on time for her next shift.

My wife is a nurse. My wife is a hero.

So sweet. It seems like this couple is a real-life Chris Traeger and Ann Perkins.

The internet's other favorite nurse.

Ariel Winter shuts down body shamers on Instagram, which unfortunately she's gotten very good at.

Body shamers! They're always getting shut down on Instagram by celebrities. Getting shut down by celebrities on Instagram is basically body shamers' favorite hobby. This weekend, body shamers got shut down by Modern Family actress Ariel Winter, so will they move on to a new activity to keep them busy now? Probably not.

Winter, 17 (aka a child), shared a photo of herself and her two young nieces on a boat. She's wearing a bathing suit, likely in order to appropriately fare in the maritime setting.

https://www.instagram.com/p/-CBc7zkxUe/

Apparently, commenters had a ton of inappropriate stuff to say about the picture. So Winter posted a response in which she addressed trolls who apparently wrote that her outfit demonstrated she was "asking for it" (ugh).

https://www.instagram.com/p/-CJzpyExS6/?taken-by=arielwinter

The caption reads:

Who knew that an innocent photo with my nieces would turn into this? The height of a girl's skirt or whatever she is wearing for that matter, does not imply what she is asking for. It sickens me to think at 17 years old, a photo of myself with my nieces is suggesting that I'm "asking for it". I typically never give power to the mean things people bravely say behind their computer screens on the Internet, but this is for the girls who are constantly bullied whether it be online or at school.. You are not asking for anything because of what you are wearing- you are expressing yourself and don't you ever think you deserve the negativity as the consequence to what you are wearing- YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL. Celebrate you and don't let anyone's comments allow you to think less of yourself. Us girls have to stick together!!!!!!

So there you have it. No one can shut down Ariel Winter body shamers like Ariel Winter. And Ariana Grande.

Widower of 9/11 hero returns her Glamour Woman of the Year Award in protest over Caitlyn Jenner.

Police Officer Moira Smith died on September 11, 2001, while responding to the World Trade Center terrorist attacks when Tower Two fell. Glamour Magazine posthumously gave her the Woman of the Year Award, which was accepted by her husband, James Smith. Now, almost fifteen years later, he's written an open letter to Glamour about why he's returning it:

In it, he writes:

I was shocked and saddened to learn that Glamour has just named Bruce Jenner ‘Woman of the Year.'...Was there no woman in America, or the rest of the world, more deserving than this man? At a time when we have women in the armed forces fighting and dying for our country, heroic doctors fighting deadly diseases, women police officers and firefighters putting their lives on the line for total strangers, brave women overcoming life threatening diseases...the list of possibilities goes on...is this the best you could do?

Glamour has responded in a statement, saying:

We were proud to honor his wife...in 2001, and we stand by our decision to honor Caitlyn Jenner. Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards recognize women with a variety of backgrounds and experiences.

It's worth noting that Jenner was specifically given "The Transgender Champion" award, and that Glamour honored many women for various contributions to women's health, sports, and entertainment. Jenner is also not the first transgender woman to win; Laverne Cox was a Woman of the Year in 2014.

Smith also writes, "I can only guess that this was a publicity stunt meant to resuscitate a dying medium." He might be disappointed to realize his open letter is bringing more attention to the award and the varied women honored by it.

One woman’s story of how she 'pretended to be dead' during the Paris attacks is going viral.

A woman's Facebook post about surviving the terrorist attack in Paris went viral this past weekend. Isobel Bowdery is a 22-year-old from Cape Town, South Africa. She was in the Bataclan concert hall for the Eagles of Death Metal concert last Friday. When terrorists started opening fire in the crowd, she "pretended to be dead for over an hour."

Isobel's profile picture.

After being posted on Saturday, her recounting of the traumatic experience received over 2.7 million likes and 760,000 shares. Mark Zuckerberg even liked it himself.

Her post starts with a description of the horrible things she witnessed. (Warning: It's graphic.)

Dozens of people were shot right in front of me. Pools of blood filled the floor. Cries of grown men who held their girlfriends dead bodies pierced the small music venue. Futures demolished, families heartbroken. in an instant. Shocked and alone, I pretended to be dead for over an hour, lying among people who could see their loved ones motionless.. Holding my breath, trying to not move, not cry - not giving those men the fear they longed to see. I was incredibly lucky to survive.

It isn't all negative, though; she also takes a moment to commend the heroes of the evening:

But being a survivor of this horror lets me able to shed light on the heroes. To the man who reassured me and put his life on line to try and cover my brain whilst i whimpered, to the couple whose last words of love kept me believing the good in the world, to the police who succeded in rescuing hundreds of people, to the complete strangers who picked me up from the road and consoled me during the 45 minutes I truly believed the boy i loved was dead

She then concludes it by honoring the memory of the deceased:

Last night, the lives of many were forever changed and it is up to us to be better people. to live lives that the innocent victims of this tragedy dreamt about but sadly will now never be able to fulfil. RIP angels. You will never be forgotten.

Here's the full post, which also includes a picture of her bloodstained shirt:

You don't need to be drunk to freak out about adorable baby animals, but it helps. The folks at BuzzFeed shocked their inebriated coworkers with the best surprise ever, armfuls of cuddly puppies. Inthe video (below) ecstatic drunk girls scream and cry like pre-teens at a Bieber concert as they're handed more and more furry friends. There were more tears than a dive bar bathroom at last call, but the puppies remained adorably unfazed by the chaos.

Trump took to Twitter to kick UFC fighter Ronda Rousey when she was down.

Presidential hopeful Donald Trump likes criticizing people almost as much as he likes receiving groveling praise. Sometimes the people he attacks on Twitter seem logical, like his opponents in the race, or folks who are vocal about what a misogynistic creep he is, but sometimes they're bizarrely petty for a man who wants to be in charge of America. Like this one about Vanity Fair, a fashion magazine that must've hurt his feelings:

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/666037735606657024

Today, he decided to take aim at UFC fighter Ronda Rousey, who lost her crown on Saturday to Holly Holm. It was a big upset, and unexpected by fans. Rousey had to be taken to the hospital afterwards, as she'd been kicked pretty hard in the jaw for the final blow. She posted this to Instagram late last night:

https://instagram.com/p/-IMlMPBEVB/

This is what The Donald said about the defeated champion:

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/666045638245810176?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

Trump probably dislikes Rousey because she told Maxim Magazine that her favorite candidate for the presidency so far is Bernie Sanders. He should be careful though. Ronda Rousey could probably still kick his ass on her worst day.

NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers shamed a fan who yelled out a hateful comment about Muslims at the game.

The Green Bay Packers went up against the Detroit Lions on Sunday and lost, but before the game even began things were going downhill for everybody. After the Paris terror attacks on Friday, the NFL teams decided to have a moment of silence honoring the people killed. One fan appeared to misunderstood the concept of "silence," because they decided to shout out something pretty hideous from the stands:

https://twitter.com/Ozz324/status/665953112444821504?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

At a press conference after his team's loss, quarterback Aaron Rodgers spoke out against the fan's hateful interruption:

https://twitter.com/MattJ_onNFL/status/666018087724912641?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

He says:

Yeah, I think it's important to do things like that [moment of silence]. We're connected, a connected world, ya know, six degrees of separation. I must admit, I was very disappointed with whoever the fan was who made a comment that I thought was really inappropriate during the moment of silence. It’s that kind of prejudicial ideology that puts us in the position that we’re in today. As a world.

Good for Rodgers for standing up for 1.6 billions Muslims in the world who have nothing to do with these attacks. Almost makes you want to shout, "Go Packers!"

Relationships are tough, but breaking up is tougher. It's hard enough to choose a method if you're the breakup-er, and trying to cope as the breakup-ee is nearly impossible without literally moving into a KFC. But thankfully, like just about everything in the times we live in, breaking up can be outsourced to a professional service. The Breakup Shop "believes everyone deserves to be single." Their mission statement is:

Let us handle the messy work of the breakup so you can spend more time swiping right.

They can be hired to execute the breakup, and they also sell packages of gifts for exes, which include wine glasses, cookies, The Notebook, and Call of Duty. Their website is refreshingly straightforward:

That poor guy has no idea.

They have multiple different breakup options, depending on how old-fashioned your methods of communication are:

1. The Breakup Text

2. The Breakup Email

3. The Standard Breakup Letter

4. The Custom Breakup Letter

The company has yet to comment on whether or not they were inspired by this Inside Amy Schumer sketch:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1Asi3rxfRY

Addendum: Need a job? If you're skilled at breakups, but unfortunately are in a happy relationship, The Breakup Shop is hiring professional "heartbreakers" to craft the copy. It's the perfect opportunity for anyone who loves making people unhappy.

Britney Spears shared an adorable photo of her 10-year-old son, Sean, on Instagram. And you might notice a few things. First of all, he won an award for "being the best encourager," which is a pretty cute thing to do. And second of all, this guy looks so much like Britney Spears. Blinks of Bicester, a hilariously British-sounding salon in Oxfordshire, England, underwent some personnel changes after a 43-year-old woman was arrested for posting Islamophobic comments on the business's Facebook page.

In the wake of the Paris attacks, she announced that Blinks of Bicester (Are they sure that's not actually a name of a children's show on the BBC?) will no longer let in "anyone from the Islamic faith" for eyelash-tinting or any other services.

She then started to "defend herself," but naturally only made matters worse.

https://twitter.com/Josephine_KK/status/665964886099435520

After word got out, people started trolling Blinks of Bicester with hilarious, fake reviews. Unfortunately, their Facebook page was taken down, but luckily, screenshots are forever:

This Muslim TV host's powerful segment on ISIS went viral for exposing their deadliest weapon.

One Muslim TV host's segment on ISIS is going viral for exposing the Islamic State's deadliest weapon: Haterade. That's right—Waleed Aly, host of the Australian talk show The Project, demonstrated that the key to ISIS's success is haters sippin' on that nasty-ass haterade. After watching it, you'll put down the bottle for life.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXUZjyZVj6s

In a segment from the show's first episode since the attacks, he starts off by discussing how ISIS appears much stronger than it actually is by "[taking] credit for any act of terrorism on Western soil," whether or not they were actually ordered by the organization. This is something ISIS has admitted to in its monthly magazine, Dabi, which actually encouraged supporters to take credit for DIY terrorist attacks so they don't appear to be "random killings."

A quote from ISIS's magazine.

The Project's clip is rapidly going viral on Facebook, with more than 210,000 likes and more than 260,000 shares. That's great news, because every person who sees the video makes ISIS's tactic less effective.

Aly discusses how ISIS, like a weird doomsday cult, wants to split the world into two camps—those who have "faith" and those who are in "disbelief"—in preparation for a "great war." They want Westerners to act hostile towards Muslims, and in turn, have those Muslims turn to ISIS in retaliation. Aly notes that it's a crazy, outlandish idea, but drives home the point that within this framework, being Islamophobic is actually a way of helping ISIS achieve their goal, however ridiculous that goal is.

So next time you wanna take a big gulp of that haterade, remember, you're taking a gulp for ISIS.
