'Pretty Little Liars' star talks about why she got honest about her anorexia.

Troian Bellisario is a star of a show called Pretty Little Liars, but she's keeping it really real off-screen about her struggle with anorexia. The 31-year-old actress spoke to People this week about her decision to talk honestly about her eating disorder, first in a 2014 interview with Seventeen, and then earlier this month in a pre-election PSA for Hillary Clinton.

“It was really important for me to tell the truth because there are so many young women and men who watch Pretty Little Liars,” Bellisario told People. “I didn’t want to exclude them from my story, which I think is a really positive story because I sought treatment, because I was supported by my friends and family, and I was able to get back to a healthy place.”

The actress said she thinks honesty on this subject is especially important in the age of social media, when young people are bombarded with images of "ideal" bodies. She described social media as “dangerous territory” because it can "create a false ideal for a woman’s body or a man’s body."

She also pointed out how these images are often altered (for example, this ad for Pretty Little Liars, whoops!), so what you're seeing might not even be a real body. “My message would be — especially with social media — don’t believe what you see at all,” she continued. “There are lots of apps you can get on your phone that can change the way your face looks and the way your body looks. We’re setting the bar at a very different place for what people think is a regular photo.”

Earlier this month, Bellisario appeared in a voting PSA for ATTN where she urged people to vote for Hillary Clinton because of her work to improve mental health care. She also spoke about battling anorexia as a kid. You can watch part of it here:

It might be too late to vote for Hillary but it's not too late to get honest about your mental health struggles. I'm with Troian!

Italy changes name of Disney's 'Moana' so people don't confuse it with porn.

Disney's heavily anticipated new movie, Moana, will hit theaters in Italy next month. But with a different title. Because in Italy, Moana is already household name and not a family-friendly one: Moana Pozzi was a famous porn actress who later became a TV personality before passing away in 1994, Variety reports. So the title has been changed to Oceania, to save kids and their parents some awkward Google searches and dinner conversations.

Fair point. Just imagine a kids' movie in the US with the title "Jenna Jameson" or "Ron Jeremy's Big Adventure!"

“There are two very simple reasons for the title change,” said an Italian marketing expert who chose to remain anonymous. “One is that if you type ‘Moana’ and do a Google search in Italy you risk coming up with porn videos. And it’s very expensive and a waste of money to try and change that.” The other reason, they said, is that: “in any Italian focus group ‘Moana’ is Moana Pozzi the porn star.”

Tbh, Moana Pozzi sounds like a total boss. After appearing in dozens of adult films, she also became a TV personality and got involved in politics. In the '90s, she co-founded Italy’s Love Party with another popular porn star named Cicciolina, who later became a member of parliament.

"Oceania" incidentally is also about a strong, independent woman. The Polynesian teen heroine notably doesn't have a romantic interest. Instead the movie follows her journey to find herself. The original Moana would have been proud.

Minnesota mom sues her transgender daughter for transitioning without her consent.

This story might put your own family Thanksgiving drama in perspective. A Minnesota mom named Anmarie Calgaro is suing her 17-year-old transgender daughter for transitioning from male to female, without "consulting" with her mother first, Pink News reports.

SMDH.

The teen, who cannot be named for legal reasons, reportedly sought the help of government agencies to begin the process of transitioning. She does not live with her mother and they have had zero contact, which makes sense since her mom is the kind of person to sue her own daughter.

Calgaro claimed in court this week that her "parental rights" had been infringed upon. She is also suing the county health board, school district and two local health care non-profits involved in her daughter's transition.

“It was brought to my knowledge that my son [sic] began receiving hormone replacement treatments from Park Nicollet Health Services to transition from male to female, with medical assistance paying for this," she said in a statement. “I was not consulted or informed about this in any way.”

Luckily, state law is on her daughter's side. According to Minnesota law: “any minor who is living separate and apart from parents and who is managing personal financial affairs may give effective consent to personal medical and other health services, and the consent of no other person is required." And earlier week, a judge ruled that Minnesota must provide gender reassignment on Medicaid.

Hey, here's a thought: if you want to get your kid to keep you informed about their life, maybe be accepting and loving (like this mom for example), and don't sue them in a court of law.

You can watch Calgaro's stomach-churning testimony here:

On Wednesday, November 16th, a northern Minnesota mother filed a civil rights lawsuit in federal district court. She is asking the court to restore her 14th amendment constitutional due process rights which she claims were violated when her parental rights were suddenly and arbitrarily removed. [See press release.] In June, 2015, without her knowledge, consent, or involvement, Anmarie Calgaro’s fifteen-year-old son obtained a “Notice of Emancipation” from Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid, a nonprofit agency that provides free legal services to low income people. Using this document alone, state agencies and private services shut Anmarie out of every important physical, emotional, and educational decision her minor son was making. Suddenly and without notice, she no longer had access to his school or health records. Without her consent, the state issued him a state driver’s license and county health services approved housing and other county services. A private health service began prescribing dangerous hormonal drugs to ‘transition’ him from male to female. This health service never consulted her, even though these controversial and largely untested drugs cause potentially irreversible effects and have unknown long-term risks. He was even prescribed narcotics from another health service. Clearly, Anmarie’s God-given and constitutionally protected parental rights have been violated. And her responsibilities to care for her son’s physical and emotional health and safety have been blocked by the actions of these agencies and services. She has been denied the chance to plead her case in court. Anmarie, her family, and her son have been grievously harmed by this unconstitutional collusion of groups that exclude her from the on-going medical, physical, and emotional care and education of her own child. Outside agencies cannot fully understand the physical background, personal struggles, insecurities, strengths, weaknesses, fears and dreams of her child without talking to her. Nor can a struggling child of sixteen be considered capable of making fully informed and life changing decisions like this. For his safety and for his welfare, Anmarie wants and needs to be involved. The Minnesota Child Protection League (MN CPL) is supporting Anmarie’s legal challenge because her rights and the welfare of her son have been outrageously trampled upon. MN CPL is also supporting her legal challenge because this is happening to other families around the country. [See MN CPL statement.] Attorney Erick Kaardal filed the complaint on Anmarie’s behalf with the support of the Thomas More Society of Chicago, a national nonprofit public interest law firm. Anmarie is asking the courts to declare that her due process rights under the 14th amendment of the Constitution have been violated, and to restore her full parental rights. She wants to help her son. She also wants to help other families in similar circumstances who have been deprived of their parental rights to help their own children. [See Anmarie’s statement.] The Minnesota Child Protection League (MN CPL) exists to protect children from exploitation, indoctrination and violence. Flirting

The cast of 'Hamilton' called out Mike Pence at last night's show, and conservatives' feelings are really hurt.

Last night, a well-connected white guy went to see the smash hit musical Hamilton on Broadway. Nothing so unusual about that, except this white guy was Mike Pence, the incoming vice president of these United States.

The audience started booing him the moment he walked in.

But that's just New York being New York. The real highlight came at the curtain call, when Pence tried to make a speedy getaway, only to find out that Brandon Victor Dixon (who plays Aaron Burr, another man whose career peaked with the vice presidency!) had a special message just for him. Dixon told Pence that the cast of this particular American story represented the diverse community alarmed by his incoming administration—people of all colors, creeds, and orientations—and exhorted him to uphold their "inalienable rights."

"I saw him enjoying it with whoever he was with, and I hope he remembers us. I truly believe we had an affect," Dixon later told Broadway.com. "It was a message from the producers the creative and the cast. If you have differences, say something! What better place than on this stage telling this story with these people? I hope he thinks of us every time he has to deal with an issue or talk about a bill or present anything."

Pence has yet to say anything about the speech, but it nonetheless went viral, which didn't set well with... well, guess who.

Yet, as many pointed out, boycotting a show that's already sold out for the next (checks watch) billion years is about as brilliant a protest strategy as trying to troll Starbucks by buying their coffee. And others had far harsher words for Trump and Pence than the Hamilton cast.

Meanwhile, some observers were distressed that Trump had successfully distracted from his radical cabinet appointees and $25 million fraud settlement in the Trump University lawsuit.

Trump and Pence take office in 62 days. Enjoy the next two months, everyone!

Canadian politics faces silent but deadly crisis after someone says the word 'fart' in parliament.

Down in the United States, we're caught up in a chaotic transition of executive power and the question of whether Broadway actors are allowed to have opinions. But things are even worse in Canada, thanks to an unexpected F-bomb.

Behold, an instantly iconic moment that will forever define the political process in the Great White North:

Yes, Conservative MP Michelle Rempel dared to speak of flatulence while engaged in a passionate appeal on behalf of Alberta. And Green Party leader Elizabeth May demanded she retract the word. And Rempel flatly refused. The system is broken, people!

As for actually farting in the House of Commons, well, no rule against that. Yet.

'I'm Gonna Ruin Thanksgiving' is the perfect anthem for everyone planning to make things awkward this holiday season.

Going home for the holidays always comes with its share of discomforts, no matter how well you and your family get along. But after an election as bitter and revolting as we got in the year of our lord 2016—with a result that has left some catatonically depressed as others gloat and commit a round of victory hate crimes—the talk over Thanksgiving dinner is bound to be especially fraught.

So, is it a worthwhile course of action to ruin a perfectly good turkey feast by touting your political convictions, and refusing to let racist, sexist, or homophobic relatives off the hook for theirs? According to comedian and ukulele virtuoso Bridgid Ryan, absolutely. Make sure no one gets out alive.

This profoundly lucky man still doesn't know who won the 2016 election.

Joe Chandler, of Brunswick, Georgia, is invested in the future of the United States. He wants us to somehow move past our reductive and divisive two-party system. He votes. And he has no idea who won the 2016 presidential election.

Ever since he declined the invitation to a party to watch the election results roll in, the artist has scrupulously avoided any information about which candidate came out on top. In public, he's worn earmuffs and a sign that says "I Still Don't Know!" And, while his protest of our dead-end political process has made him a little "stir-crazy," he's found that it's "very peaceful" in his "bubble of ignorance."

Yeah, dude. No kidding.

Kids reclaim vandalized Brooklyn park by replacing swastikas with hearts, flowers, and messages of love.

Brooklyn's Adam Yauch Park, named after the late member of the Beastie Boys who was once called "Muslim Americans' hero, and America's personal Jewish Gandhi," had its playground vandalized with swastikas and "Go Trump" graffiti this week. Images of the hateful messages spread quickly on social media.

But locals weren't having it. As NPR reports, city workers removed the graffiti Friday night, and on Saturday, kids returned to their playground to decorate it with very different messages. The posted hearts and flowers on the make-believe train, and a warning appeared in chalk: "This machine stops fascists."

Hate crimes have swept the country since Donald Trump won the election, but if this story is any indication, love isn't giving up the fight just yet.

'SNL' captures exactly how you feel about going home for Thanksgiving post-election.

Living in a post-election world isn't easy. Most of us didn't expect that we'd have to go home for Thanksgiving under these conditions. And while you might come from a liberal household, odds are that you've got at least one wildcard aunt or uncle who for some reason decided to cast their vote for that human-shaped amalgamation of Cheeto dust.

Last night, SNL aired a Target commercial sketch that offered all of us exactly what we'll need when we're home this week: "a big empty parking lot you can just come sit in for a sec."

Instead of focusing on the anger that many people associate with dealing with the combination of politics and family, the SNL writers tapped into the feeling of defeat and exhaustion that comes with watching people you know and love somehow decide that a man who can't manage his own Twitter account should run the country.

The sketch is all about killing time and escaping your family for a bit in the aisles of Target, where you're free to sit down in the bra section for a bit, or wander the clothes and remember that the made-for-Target Mossimo brand actually has some cute things.

Before you hop on your plane, train or automobile this week, watch this clip for some tips on how heading to your local Target with the excuse of picking up some things will buy you some precious time away from your family where you can take some deep breaths and find your zen.

Alec Baldwin returns to 'SNL' as a panicking President-elect.

0
0

For the first time since the election, Alec Baldwin returned to SNL last night as the President-elect, Donald Trump. The sketch takes us to Trump National Golf Club to see exactly how Trump is feeling now that he's in charge of the country, which we learn is: not so good.

Riffing on recent news that Trump has recently said he is considering keeping major components of Obama's Affordable Care Act, the sketch considers why Trump would be making decisions that seem against what his platform stood for. The answer they come up with is that he has no plans of his own.

The anxiety Trump feels over being tasked with a job he probably never wanted in the first place causes him to go back on other promises he made to his voters, including deporting millions of undocumented immigrants, and appointing a special prosecutor to put Hillary Clinton in jail.

When left alone at his desk, Trump decides he needs to start somewhere, and that starting place is figuring out so, what is ISIS exactly? by asking everyone's go-to trusted source for panic-induced research, Siri.

The sketch manages to find some levity in the scary situation with which the country is faced: the aftermath of electing president with no prior political experience. By tapping into the psyche of a man whose faux-confidence seems to reek of deep-seated insecurity, the SNL writers deflate Trump into a clueless kid who just got the keys to an expensive car but hasn't ever taken driver's ed. We see him flip-flop, second-guess himself, and confirm with future VP Mike Pence that Pence will basically be doing everything.

Possibly the best part of the entire sketch is seeing how Kellyanne Conway, Trump's campaign manager played by Kate McKinnon, feels about Trump winning the election, which is: horribly, horribly guilty.

Kanye West insults Beyonce, Jay Z and Hillary Clinton in bizarre rant, then ends his concert early.

Saturday night at the Sacramento stop on his Life of Pablo tour, Kanye West ended his concert after performing only three songs and then going on a 15 minute rant in which he lashed out at Beyonce, Jay Z and Hillary Clinton.

Following his recent announcement that had he voted (he didn't), he would have voted for Donald Trump, you'd think things couldn't get any worse. But you don't have to be politically active to know that throwing shade at Beyonce is a pretty bad move. The people have already turned to Twitter to create the hashtag #KanyeIsOverParty, where they're celebrating the rapper's strange demise.

After a few minutes of the rant, which was vaguely political but mostly doesn't make sense, West inexplicably says "oh yeah, I'm on my Trump shit right now," which probably loosely translates to, "overly emotional and not putting words together in any coherent way."

The insult to Beyonce included West saying that he was hurt over an allegation that she made an arrangement with MTV that she would only perform at the VMAs if she won "Video of the Year" for "Formation." His frustration with Jay Z was simply that Jay Z hasn't called him recently. Rap stars, they're just like us!

He took a dig at Obama for not being able to effect change while in office, and said Hillary Clinton's biggest problem with her campaign was not paving a new way for the American people. He addressed the (probably very confused) audience, warning them, "if you keep following old models your ass going to get Hillary Clinton'd." Kind of poetic how he turned her name into a verb, I guess?

Well, the Beyhive has officially been upset. Combine that with angry Hillary supporters and it'll be interesting to see what the rest of Kanye's tour looks like, and whether he'll still be able to sell all that Life of Pablo merch.

If you want to experience the insanity for yourself, watch some clips of the bizarro speech here:

Mike Pence loved 'Hamilton,' wasn't offended by his reception, says 'that's what freedom sounds like.'

Another day, another failure to coordinate messaging between the president- and vice president-elect. Even as Donald Trump continued the very important business of blasting Saturday Night Live and demanding that the cast of the "highly overrated" Hamilton apologize for asking Mike Pence to respect their rights, Pence himself was defending their message on Fox News Sunday.

"I know this is a very disappointing time for people that did not see their candidate win in this national election. I know that this is a very anxious time for some people," Pence said. "My daughter and I and her cousins really enjoyed the show. Hamilton is just an incredible production and incredibly talented people. It was a real joy to be there." He also "wasn't offended" by the cast's appeal at the curtain call, or the audience's booing as he entered the theater: "I nudged my kids and reminded them, that's what freedom sounds like," he said.

Will Trump and Pence ever agree, even about something as simple as the right to free speech? Do they even talk? And why didn't Pence Instagram his playbill?

Michael Shannon is literally telling old Trump voters that it's time for them to die.

Michael Shannon is currently out promoting Nocturnal Animals, a revenge film in which he co-stars with Jake Gyllenhaall, so it's understandable that he'd have payback on the brain. But his latest interview with Metro News suggests he's not thinking about much else, either—he's literally telling old Trump voters to die.

"We’re going to need a lot of vengeance movies in the next four years," he said, addressing the "catharsis" of such blood-soaked stories. "I have two young children. Basically [Trump] is probably going to destroy the earth and civilization as we know it. It’s kind of terrifying." He then doubted the efficacy of protests, saying "Maybe you need a civil war or something."

It just gets better from there: "I don’t want to live in a country where people voted for Trump. I want to live in some other fucking country. But I don’t want to run away. So we’re just going to have to bust this thing up," he said. "There’s a lot of old people who need to realize they’ve had a nice life, and it’s time for them to move on. Because they’re the ones who go out and vote for these assholes. If you look at the young people, between 18 and 25, if it was up to them Hillary would have been president. No offense to the seniors out there. My mom’s a senior citizen. But if you’re voting for Trump, it’s time for the urn."

His advice for people whose parents went for Trump? It's pretty simple, really: "Fuck 'em. You’re an orphan now. Don’t go home. Don’t go home for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Don’t talk to them at all. Silence speaks volumes."

Especially when you look as intense as Michael Shannon.

New York Governor orders creation of an anti-hate crime unit post-election.

Sunday morning in a statement made at Abysinnian Baptist Church in Harlem, New York governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that he is ordering the creation of a special police unit tasked with addressing the rise in hate crime that has occurred since the election.

The unit's job will be to investigate all hate crimes and to "prosecute the perpetrator to the fullest extent of the law," says Cuomo. The governor also reminded his audience that hate crimes are not just sinful or wrong, they're illegal.

His speech also included a planned proposal for this January that will expand the state's Human Rights Law, which currently prohibits discrimination in education, employment, housing and other essential types of social access. This expansion will specifically ensure that the law also protects children in all schools, public and private.

In the face of immigration policies that could result in deportation of the country's estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants, Cuomo made it clear that he will do all that he can to protect those individuals who are living in New York state.

"We will be putting together a public-private legal defense fund to provide immigrants who can’t afford their own defense, the legal assistance they need," he said of his plans for protection.

Several other major U.S. city and state officials have made it clear that they are working to uphold their laws that help them protect their immigrant citizens. Mayors in San Francisco, Chicago, Portland, Oreg. and Seattle have already made pledges to retain their status as "sanctuary cities," a designation for cities with policies that instruct local or state government officials to not alert the federal government of citizens with illegal alien status within their communities.

Cuomo also calls on his citizens to lead the way for positive growth and to take a stand against hate, citing New York as the progressive capital of the country.
